Pasadena’s biggest high school football rivalry is back, and the anticipation is building as the Chesapeake Cougars prepare to host the Northeast Eagles for the annual Dena Bowl this Friday, October 16.
Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Chesapeake High School, and tickets for this year’s highly anticipated matchup are already sold out. With both teams coming off impressive shutout victories, Friday night’s showdown promises to deliver plenty of intensity, school pride and hometown excitement.
For players, students, alumni and fans throughout Pasadena, the Dena Bowl is about more than football. It is a cherished community tradition that brings together two neighboring schools for one of the most anticipated nights on the local sports calendar.

Cougars Look to Extend Their Winning Streak
Chesapeake enters Friday’s contest with a 5-1 record after shutting out Severn Run, 21-0, on Friday, October 9. The victory was a strong response to a heartbreaking three-point loss in the Cougars’ previous outing and another example of the team’s defensive strength.
Through their first six games, the Cougars have allowed an average of just seven points per game, making their defense one of the team’s biggest strengths heading into the rivalry matchup.
Head Coach Rob Elliott, now in his 16th season leading Chesapeake, returns a roster featuring experienced seniors and talented underclassmen on both sides of the ball.
The Cougars’ offensive options include senior quarterbacks Lance Blair and Dennis Bailey, along with senior running backs Xavian McCain, Carson Soto and Gavin Jagoe. Senior receivers Alan McDonald and Kamari Ellis add experience to the passing game, while juniors Gabe Tudor, Brody Collins, Malik Henson-Coleman and Carter Dziuban provide additional playmaking options.
Chesapeake also features a veteran offensive line, with seniors Dawson Michovich and Ethan Hall joined by juniors Colton Guthrie, Andrew Shaffer and Maddex Veasel, along with sophomores Tyler Holt and Cooper English.
Defensively, seniors Jaden Balsarick, Payton Lazas and Nick Zenker anchor the defensive line, while linebackers Jake Forman, Ryan Doggette and Evan Birrane help lead the defensive effort. The secondary includes seniors Jack Wright, Lucas Rothenhoefer, Mason Hood and Bailey.
Coming off a 7-3 campaign last season, the Cougars have established themselves as a strong contender in the 3A South region. Now, they will look to carry that momentum into one of the most meaningful games on their schedule.
Eagles Bring Momentum Into the Rivalry
Northeast arrives at Chesapeake riding a two-game winning streak of its own after earning a commanding 35-0 road victory over Centennial on Saturday, October 10.
The Eagles have improved to 3-2 on the season, and their recent success has been fueled by a defense that has not allowed a point in either of its last two games. The shutout victory over Centennial marked the third time this season Northeast has won by 35 points or more.
Under fourth-year Head Coach Caprizio Chisholm, the Eagles are looking to build on last season’s 5-5 overall record and make a statement against their longtime rivals.
Northeast’s roster features a sizable senior class, with 15 seniors providing experience and leadership. The team’s offensive line returns all of its members from 2025, bringing added continuity and protection for the Eagles’ skill players.
Senior running back Dakari Joyner is among the players to watch. Joyner has rushed for 379 yards and four touchdowns in four games, making him an important part of the Eagles’ offensive attack. Senior wide receiver Tyler Fortuna, junior quarterback Marcus Jones, junior all-purpose player Aaron Dodson and junior running back/wide receiver Eli Buckmaster are also expected to play key roles.
Sophomore Jordan Dooms adds another option at tight end, while a veteran offensive line featuring seniors Antony Daniels, Hunter Kramer, Ademidi Onitiri, David O’Connor-Smith and DeMarcus Carroll will be tasked with creating opportunities against Chesapeake’s defense.
On the defensive side, seniors Landon Perkins and Bobby Stack lead the defensive line, while linebackers Michael Taylor, Ryan Mullens and Mason Leichling provide experience. Senior defensive backs Rayhon Cooper and Antoine Parms, along with juniors Jaxson Gilliam and Jason Hartman, will be important in limiting Chesapeake’s offensive production.
With consecutive shutout wins behind them, the Eagles will enter Friday’s game looking to turn their recent momentum into a breakthrough against their rivals.
A Rivalry With Plenty of History
The Dena Bowl has delivered its share of memorable moments over the years, and Chesapeake has held the upper hand in recent matchups.

Northeast claimed a narrow 9-7 victory in 2019, but Chesapeake responded with a dominant 55-12 win in 2021. The Cougars followed with victories of 34-7 in 2022, 21-14 in 2023 and 31-13 in 2024.
Last year’s game, played on Northeast’s home field in front of a packed crowd, was another hard-fought battle. Chesapeake emerged with a 13-6 victory, securing its fifth consecutive Dena Bowl win and extending its recent dominance in the rivalry.
The Cougars will now attempt to make it six straight victories over the Eagles, while Northeast will be looking to end that streak on Chesapeake’s home field.
One Night, Two Schools, One Community
While the teams will take the field focused on the win, the Dena Bowl has long represented something bigger than the final score. It is a celebration of the athletes, coaches, students, families and supporters who make Pasadena’s high school sports community special.
With Chesapeake’s defense continuing to limit opponents and Northeast riding a two-game shutout streak, Friday’s matchup features two teams arriving with confidence and plenty to prove.
The sold-out crowd will add another layer of excitement as the Cougars and Eagles meet under the lights for a rivalry game that brings the community together year after year.
The Dena Bowl kicks off Friday, October 16, at 6 p.m. at Chesapeake High School. Tickets are sold out.
No matter which side of the rivalry fans support, one thing is certain: Pasadena will be watching.
