For Pasadena residents Gus Kurtz and Tony Tawney, the process of building houses has been a shared lifelong passion. In fact, when Kurtz was just fifteen years old, he constructed an entire addition onto his grandmother’s house. “We’ve been doing this since we were kids. We both just really like building houses,” emphasized Kurtz. Thirty-five years later, that passion for building houses remains strong, and has resulted in the construction of thousands of houses, kitchens, bathrooms, and other residential and commercial projects through their company, Kurtz Development.
After officially establishing themselves as Kurtz Development in 1988 when they became licensed by the Maryland Home Improvement Commission, Kurtz and Tawney got to work on making a name for themselves in the community. “We made sure we had the know-how and all the tools to be able to complete each project from start to finish,” explained Tawney. “We have built and continue to build everything like it’s our very own. I’m also a stickler for if you say you’re going to be somewhere at a certain time, you’re there at that time.”
That unwavering commitment to a strong work ethic has proven successful, propelling Kurtz Development to the credible and dependable reputation they have today. “We’ve been very blessed to have never been out of work, not even for a day,” explained Tawney. “We really don’t do any advertising. Ninety-nine percent of our business comes from word of mouth referrals,” added Kurtz.
While the Kurtz Development team has the ability to take on any size residential or commercial construction project, their specialty is and always has been large-scale projects. “We can do everything from additions, second floors, kitchens, bathrooms, basements…but our expertise is in major projects,” said Tawney.
Throughout their over three decades in business, challenges have certainly presented themselves. “The labor shortage and the pricing increase of materials have been our latest obstacles,” explained Kurtz. “Then there’s the building permit process. It can be a cumbersome process especially when the houses are waterfront or in a critical area, which is really a lot of Pasadena.”
Despite the challenges that Kurtz Development has encountered over the years, they have remained successful in each and every project they undertake. “We love that we’re able to work in the same community that we live in. Pasadena has that small-town feel, and we often run into a lot of our clients while we’re out and about. We’ve been very blessed,” concluded Tawney.
