Imagine being in a wax museum when all of its historical figures – Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Cleopatra, Captain Blackbeard, John Adams, Annie Oakley and others – come to life. That’s exactly what happens this weekend in Chesapeake High School’s production of “Night At The Wax Museum”.
Set in the late ‘80s, a group of high school students fail their history class and consequently must retake the course over the summer. Their history teacher, Heather Fairchild, has arranged for them to help her two elderly aunts set up a new wax museum as a class project. As the students prepare for the opening of the new museum, they are surprised to encounter some historical – and hysterical – personalities.
“The costumes, the makeup, the characters are all inspired by the ‘80s,” explained Chesapeake Theatre Department’s publicity spokeswoman Susan Murphy. “It echoes the vibe of the Night At The Museum movie where the characters come to life.”Rehearsals for Night At The Wax Museum began in mid-December. Since then, the 48 Chesapeake theater students involved in the show have been busy preparing set props and working on lines. “It’s an ensemble comedy, so it’s nice because lots of different student actors and crew get to shine. It’s a fun opportunity to see the kids act,” said Murphy.
