In every community, there are quiet forces doing the hard, meaningful work of helping neighbors rebuild their lives. In Pasadena and across Anne Arundel County, Opportunity Ministries is one of those forces – providing not just a place to live, but a path forward for individuals recovering from substance use disorders.
At its heart, Opportunity Ministries is about second chances.
The organization offers safe, structured, and affordable transitional housing for men, women, and women with children committed to recovery. With six men’s homes, one women’s home and one women-with-children home in Anne Arundel County, these residences are more than just roofs over heads – they are supportive environments where individuals can begin to rediscover stability, purpose, and hope.
Recovery is not a quick or simple process. It’s a lifelong journey that requires consistency, accountability, and community. Opportunity Ministries recognizes this and focuses on helping residents build the skills needed to live independently and successfully. Participants are encouraged to pursue employment, education, and counseling while developing healthy routines and life skills that support long-term sobriety.
Each home operates as a team-oriented environment, where residents share responsibilities, support one another, and grow together. Weekly chores, shared spaces, and structured expectations create a sense of stability and pride. Just as importantly, residents are encouraged to mentor others – turning their own experiences into a source of strength for someone else walking the same path.
While Opportunity Ministries does not provide clinical detox or inpatient treatment, it plays a critical role in the recovery ecosystem. The organization works closely with local healthcare providers, treatment centers, and county programs to ensure residents have access to the services they need. Partnerships with community resources help connect individuals to counseling, employment assistance, transportation, and other essential supports – removing barriers that can stand in the way of lasting recovery.
Behind the mission are passionate leaders who understand the journey firsthand. Chief Operating Officer Mickey Kramer brings not only professional dedication but also personal experience, with more than three decades of sobriety. Her compassion and encouragement set the tone for the organization, creating a family-like atmosphere where every resident is treated with dignity and care. Co-founder Larry Kramer, a Naval veteran and longtime Maryland resident, has been instrumental in building and advocating for supportive housing throughout the state.
Together, their work has created a ripple effect – helping individuals rebuild their lives, reconnect with their families, and reenter the community as productive, engaged citizens.
That sense of community connection is at the center of an upcoming fundraiser that invites Pasadena residents and local businesses and churches to get involved.
According to Opportunity Ministries Program Manager (who is coming up on five years clean and sober) and Pasadena Business Association Board Member Arnold Moreland, the organization will host a community-wide fundraiser on Tuesday, March 31, from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM at Oscar’s Ale House in Pasadena. Throughout the day, 10% of all sales will be donated directly to support Opportunity Ministries’ programs.
The event is designed to bring people together – not just to raise funds, but to build awareness and strengthen local connections. Guests can expect opportunities to network with fellow community members, participate in a raffle and silent auction featuring donated items from local businesses, and learn more about the impact Opportunity Ministries is making right here in Anne Arundel County.
Funds raised will go toward several important initiatives, including Tyler’s Closet Clothing Pantry, which provides essential items to residents and community members in need; ongoing residential and facility improvements; and basic supplies such as bedding and toiletries for those entering the program. The organization is also working to build long-term sustainability through an endowment fund that will ensure these services remain available for years to come.
Moreland emphasizes that there are many ways for the community to participate – whether by attending the event, donating items for the auction, or simply helping spread the word.
It’s a reminder that supporting recovery doesn’t require grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s as simple as showing up, sharing a meal, or contributing in a small but meaningful way.
Opportunity Ministries continues to demonstrate what’s possible when compassion meets action. By providing structure, support, and a sense of belonging, they are helping individuals not only recover—but truly rebuild.
And in doing so, they are making Pasadena stronger, one life at a time.
