Northeast High School Students “Seize the Day” with High-Energy Production of Newsies
Northeast High School’s auditorium will soon burst to life with turn-of-the-century grit, soaring vocals, and boundless energy as the school’s Theatre Group presents Disney’s Newsies: The Musical on November 20, 21, and 22 at 7 p.m. The beloved Broadway hit, inspired by the Newsboys Strike of 1899, brings a story of courage, unity, and justice centerstage – messages that resonate strongly with students and audiences alike.
“We chose Newsies this fall because it has such a great storyline and a positive, empowering message about standing up for what’s right and finding strength in community – something we felt really resonated with our students,” said Sarah Delsignore, Northeast High School Theater Director. “This show challenges them artistically, but it also connects deeply with who they are and the world they’re growing up in.”
With a Tony Award–winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, Newsies follows charismatic newsboy Jack Kelly and a spirited group of young workers who dream of a better life far from New York City’s crowded streets. When powerful publishers raise newspaper distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies the city’s youth to strike back, sparking a movement that changes history. The production promises fast-paced choreography, heartfelt performances, and iconic songs like “Carrying the Banner,” “Santa Fe,” and “Seize the Day.”
This year’s cast features a blend of seasoned performers and first-time actors, each bringing their own spark to the story’s unforgettable characters.
