The Northeast High School girls varsity softball team is doing more than just winning games this season. They’re making a statement.
Fresh off a commanding 11-1 victory over Severn Run High School, the Eagles continue to prove why they’re one of the most formidable teams in the county. What began as a close two-run game in their previous outing quickly turned into a decisive, ten-run showcase on Monday afternoon, marking yet another lopsided win in a season already full of them. Northeast has now secured five victories by ten runs or more, a testament to both their depth and dominance.
At the center of the latest win was sophomore pitcher Tiffany Mewshaw, who delivered a standout performance in the circle. Mewshaw worked all five innings, allowing just two hits and one unearned run while striking out ten. Her command and composure set the tone early and kept Severn Run’s offense off balance throughout the game.
Offensively, the Eagles were relentless. Senior shortstop Brynn Jones continues to be a catalyst at the top of the lineup, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs, two stolen bases, and a run scored. Jones has been especially dangerous on the basepaths, recording at least one stolen base in each of her last four games. Fellow senior Madison Burris also made her presence felt, reaching base in three of her four plate appearances while adding two stolen bases and a run.
As a team, Northeast showcased impressive discipline at the plate, finishing with a .516 on-base percentage. In contrast, Severn Run struggled to generate offense and posted a .167 OBP. The Eagles consistently applied pressure and rarely left the bases empty, capitalizing on scoring opportunities.
The win extends Northeast’s home winning streak to three games and improves their overall record to an impressive 10-1. Their success at home has been fueled largely by stellar pitching, with the Eagles allowing an average of just 0.7 runs per game during that stretch.
Led by head coach Joe Hart in his 16th season, Northeast entered the year with high expectations following a remarkable 24-2 campaign last spring that saw them claim county championship honors and advance to the state semifinals. While the team graduated seven seniors, including key contributors behind the plate and in the circle, the Eagles have reloaded with a mix of experienced upperclassmen and promising young talent.
The senior core, featuring Jones, Maiah Parker, Presley McGinty, Jenna Burroughs, and Burris, brings years of varsity experience and a winning pedigree. This group has lost just one regular-season game during their high school careers. They are joined by impactful juniors like Kaileigh Arrington and Carleigh Canada, along with sophomore Sophie Bossom.
Newcomers are also making an immediate impact. Alongside Mewshaw, players like Hayden Flasinski, Nyjah Patterson, Savannah Dwarshuis, Kendra Holtman, and Abigail Melton are providing valuable depth and energy as the season progresses.
Competing in the Class 3A East Region I, Northeast faces new challenges this season, including a rivalry with Chesapeake High School that could ultimately shape their postseason path. The Eagles take on the Cougars on April 27 at Northeast.
Next up, the Eagles will travel to South River High School (8-4-1) on Wednesday, April 15, another key matchup as they look to keep their momentum rolling.
If early results are any indication, Northeast isn’t just aiming for another strong season. They are positioning themselves for another deep postseason run.
