It was this past January when Pasadena artist Katie Detrich sat down to create her painting of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The Key Bridge, she said, has always been the “almost home” mark on summer boat rides, and she wanted to come up with her own depiction of the scenic Baltimore bridge.
Fast forward to the morning of March 26 when Maryland and the rest of the country awoke to the news of the bridge’s collapse, and Detrich said she immediately began to pray for all of those who lost their lives on the bridge and the families who were impacted.
“I have so many memories and photos of the bridge that I could talk about for hours. As a child, I would join the children in the neighborhood and we would ride our bikes to Fort Smallwood Park and play in the field overlooking the bridge,” said Detrich, who was born and raised in Pasadena and graduated from Chesapeake High School.
After realizing just how many others in the community had similar memories and were deeply saddened by the loss of the bridge, Detrich, who provides art therapy at a recovery center in Baltimore, recalled her January painting and came up with an idea. “Clients tell me all the time they feel peace and stress relief during and after painting,” she said. “I thought it would be nice to share my Key Bridge painting with locals and hear stories and memories related to the bridge.”
Starting this week, Detrich will instruct several Francis Scott Key Bridge-themed paint nights at various locations, where registered attendees are invited to create their own Key Bridge painting. The two-hour event costs $30 for a canvas or $40 for wood, slate or a bushel lid. “I hand draw the design on before the event to make it more enjoyable for the painters. They can also customize their painting.”
