At Baltimore Washington International (BWI) Thurgood Marshall Airport, there are over 35 retail and market shops spread throughout its five concourses. What many local residents may not realize is that several of those shops were constructed by Pasadena’s very own DJ Miller Construction, a small, family-owned construction business.
Pasadena resident Danny Miller started the business nearly seven years ago in April 2017, when he saw a potential for growth in construction opportunities at BWI Airport. Miller, who was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army before becoming a carpenter in the Baltimore carpenters union, had been a general/senior superintendent for some regionally prominent general contractors and had done a number of jobs at BWI Airport prior to officially forming his business. Today, Miller and his spouse, Susan, are proprietors of DJ Miller Construction, partnering alongside their son, Joe Guido.
With the mission of bringing a small-firm feel to airport construction projects, DJ Miller Construction set out to offer everything from tenant fit-outs, maintenance and repairs, and around-the-clock emergency service. One of their projects that they’ve taken great pride in is the completion of the first ever Rita’s Italian Ice at BWI Airport, which was the testing ground for the chain’s first ever airport location. Additional retail shops they’ve worked on within BWI Airport include Sunglass Hut, Sock Express, Sock It To You, Roam Fitness, and MAC.
“We are a small, family-owned contractor at heart. Because of this, we are able to form relationships with our clients in which they can call us for any needs they may have, from changing light bulbs to a full renovation. The relationships we form are our biggest asset,” said Guido. “When clients call us, they speak to ownership directly and have a partner to help them get through whatever project they are envisioning. That being said, we have strategically aligned ourselves with some incredible trade partners, bringing great knowledge and expertise to any situation.”
Asked why they believe Pasadena is a beneficial location for their business, Guido said it’s all about being central to it all. “Pasadena is a great central location for central Maryland. Although our work is predominantly at BWI airport, we will take on projects outside of the airport’s facility. Having the central location is beneficial, not only for us, but also our clients as we can respond very quickly and effectively,” he said.
Looking ahead to 2024 and beyond, Guido emphasized that DJ Miller Construction expects continued growth across the board. “We’ll have more jobs, continued growth of our client base, and overall continued support for the partners we work with,” he concluded.
