The underdog role suited the Chesapeake Cougars just fine on Wednesday evening.
Facing a Northeast Eagles squad that entered the regional championship with a sparkling 22-3 record, Chesapeake delivered one of its biggest wins of the season, edging Northeast 3-2 behind a complete-game effort from senior pitcher Amya Murphy.
The Cougars (16-6) leaned on timely hitting, disciplined at-bats, and steady defense to knock off the Eagles and secure the regional crown in a tightly contested battle between two of the area’s top softball programs.
Northeast struck first in the opening inning when Jenna Burroughs delivered an RBI single to give the Eagles an early 1-0 advantage.
But Chesapeake answered quickly in the top of the second inning with the kind of opportunistic offense that defined the afternoon. Jordyn Layne tied the game with a single to center field before the Cougars added two more runs on a walk by Allison Schaefer and a fielder’s choice off the bat of Kendall Kotofski.
That three-run surge proved to be enough support for Murphy, who turned in a composed performance in the circle. The Class of 2026 standout worked all seven innings, allowing just three hits and two runs — only one earned — while striking out two and not issuing a single walk.
Northeast threatened throughout the game, but Chesapeake’s defense repeatedly came through in key moments to preserve the narrow lead.
Eagles starter Presley McGinty was strong in defeat, tossing a complete game while striking out six. Chesapeake managed just four hits against her, but the Cougars made the most of their opportunities and showed patience at the plate by drawing five walks.
