For Dave Martin, owner of Dave’s Barber Shop, barbering was never supposed to be the final destination.
Growing up in Riviera Beach after his parents moved to the area in the mid-1990s, Martin remembers Pasadena as “a pretty picturesque neighborhood.” He attended Chesapeake Middle School and graduated from Northeast High School, building the kind of deep local roots that would later shape his business and his approach to community.
As a young man, Martin once dreamed of becoming a criminal defense lawyer. Cutting hair, he thought, would simply be a stepping stone. But somewhere between experimenting on his best friend’s beard at age 14 and being inspired by the barbers at Xtreme Cutz in Glen Burnie, he realized barbering offered something meaningful: the ability to work with his hands, create something personal, and help people feel confident.
“I always liked the way I felt after a haircut,” Martin said. “How cool is it to give somebody that feeling?”
That sense of care became the foundation for Dave’s Barber Shop, located at 8468 Fort Smallwood Road in Pasadena – a place that already held personal significance long before Martin became its owner. As a child, it was the very spot where his parents brought him for haircuts.

Today, more than 12 years after opening the shop, Martin still sees it as a reflection of both himself and the community that helped build it.
“The community has helped me from the very beginning,” he said. “I was just a 22-year-old kid and I was almost in over my head.”
Friends volunteered to help paint during the original buildout. A client donated flooring. Local businesses stepped in to lend support. Martin recalls those early days with deep gratitude, saying he will always feel indebted to Pasadena and its people.
That appreciation shows in the atmosphere inside the shop. Dave’s Barber Shop aims to feel welcoming, relaxed, and family-friendly. Old comedy movies often play in the background while customers swap stories and laugh together. Martin says he understands that getting a haircut can feel intimidating for some children or first-time customers, so creating a comfortable environment matters just as much as the haircut itself.
“It’s onto consultation,” he said. “That’s the foundation for a great haircut.”

Martin believes one thing that sets his shop apart is consistency and pride in the craft. Every barber in the shop, he says, is someone he would personally trust in the chair.
Over the years, the business has evolved alongside its owner. The shop has undergone remodels, seen generations of customers come and go, and matured with time. Along the way, Martin has experienced moments both chaotic and memorable — from medical emergencies in the chair to unusual haircut requests, including one customer who asked for a “Brian Bosworth” haircut, prompting a quick Google search before delivering a flattop-mohawk hybrid.
But the moments that stay with him most are the ones that reveal the heart of Pasadena.
Martin recalls holding a fundraiser after the death of his best friend. He expected close friends and family to attend. What surprised him was seeing regular customers come in for haircuts and leave donations simply because they knew how much his friend meant to him.
“That almost brought me to tears,” he said.
For Martin, that’s what Pasadena is all about.
“You can say what you want about Pasadena, but we’re a family,” he said.
He sees that sense of connection everywhere – especially on Saturdays at the Lake Shore fields, where he can spot haircuts he created while watching local families gather together.

Martin believes local barbershops should do more than provide haircuts. Whether sponsoring youth sports, donating to volunteer fire departments, or quietly helping people who cannot regularly afford a haircut, he sees barber shops as part of the social fabric of a town.
That philosophy has helped Dave’s Barber Shop become part of what Martin calls “a new era of barbering” in Pasadena – one centered on quality, inclusivity, and community rather than simply “fast and cheap.”
Looking ahead, Martin hopes to expand into a larger Pasadena location someday. But no matter how much the business grows, he says the mission will stay the same.
“I’d like the community to know that we care, and that we wouldn’t be here without them,” he said. “If anybody has ever come in once, or referred somebody to us, we are so grateful.”
